Account of payments (250 B.C.) An account of payments, partly for repairing of canals and stone cutting, and partly for guards. Of these, three classes are specified: ten village guards of Philadelphia together with ten Arabs; five guards posted in the prison; six watchmen to look after the canal embankments during the inundation. The regular guards have a salary of six drachmae a month, while the watchmen on the canal banks are only paid two and a half drachmae.
